Activities
COSECAM was established in 2001.
The founding idea being “One stick breaks easily but a bunch is unbreakable”- a few organizations came together with the idea that collaborating to share training and resources can prove a more formidable force against the sexual exploitation of children than any one alone. Initially, COSECAM began with three members but has since grown to include twenty-two member organizations.
COSECAM promotes co-ordination and co-operation between local NGO’s with similar goals in order to develop comprehensive approaches and strategies. They strengthen the capacity and the skills of local NGO’s in their specific work areas, allowing for increased specialization.
Besides working to improve the capacity of local NGO’s on the grass roots level, COSECAM also focuses on advocacy, applying political pressure and popular activism to influence relevant government bodies.
Four main programs:
Advocacy: This program operates an effective policy-influencing project, a child advocacy unit, and undertakes constituency support building.
Research: COSECAM's research program examines the capacity of local organisations, performs studies on the demand for child sex and conducts Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) situation analyses.
Institutional Capacity Building And Human Resources (IRHD): With this program COSECAM trains program staff, provides support for provincial NGO members and focuses on corporate development and co-operation.
Re-Habilitation And Re-Integration: This program offers child re-habilitation services, a vocation training scholarship fund and coordinates the case management for the victims of sexual exploitation.
COSECAM held a Workshop on October 15, 2006 to address the Commercial Exploitation of Children, especially girls.
